Johannesburg, South Africa – Profmed has announced its 2026 benefit enhancements, reaffirming its commitment to serve South Africa’s professional community with products that advance alongside their careers, lifestyles, and financial realities.
The Profmed increases average 6.76% for 2026 (weighted based on membership) and for the second year in a row are the lowest when compared to other open schemes. More than 74% of Profmed’s members have a less than 7% increase for 2026. The new enhancements provide Profmed’s members the ability to build personalised, flexible medical cover that grows with them during every stage of their personal and professional journeys.

“Profmed has always been a scheme designed for professionals and that distinction matters,” says Craig Comrie, Chief Executive of Profmed. “Professionals lead complex, mobile lives. They work long hours, study for years before earning their first real salary, move between contracts and countries, and take time out for postgraduate study or research.
“Where other schemes require members to choose a single, fixed plan, Profmed lets you build your personalised cover like building blocks,” says Comrie. “You choose your foundation and then add what you need, whether it’s more day-to-day flexibility, gap protection, or earning additional benefits for preventative health.”
There are additional benefits aimed specifically to support professionals as well. For example, the Sabbatical Benefit lets members take up to three years off (whether for study, research, travel, or personal reasons) without losing their membership or facing re-underwriting, while the International Travel Benefit provides up to 150 days of emergency cover abroad, renewable simply by returning home and departing again.
“Careers are not always linear,” says Comrie. “Professionals might take time off, move abroad, or start a practice. Profmed gives them the freedom to make those choices without compromising their healthcare security.”
Starting strong with ProSelect and ProSelect Savvy
For young graduates and early-career professionals, Profmed’s ProSelect and ProSelect Savvy plans offer comprehensive hospital cover at an affordable contribution. These plans prioritise essential protection while keeping costs in check. These plans have a 5.5% increase for 2026.
ProSelect Savvy provides additional savings for members who use a designated network of hospitals, ensuring affordability without sacrificing quality care. Members are covered for all major medical events, with the reassurance that they’re not paying for benefits they may not yet need.
Adding flexibility with PPS Wallet, Gap Cover and Amplifire
Unlike traditional medical savings accounts that reset annually, the PPS Wallet grows over time, letting members save monthly or deposit lump sums from bonuses. These funds can be used for targeted out-of-hospital expenses like physiotherapy or elective surgeries. For members with families, the PPS Wallet can even function as a savings account for upcoming orthodontics, spreading the costs over time.
Gap Cover complements this approach by protecting members against in-hospital specialist shortfalls, ensuring that unexpected costs (like those from a paediatric surgery or sports injury) don’t disrupt financial stability. Together, PPS Wallet and Gap Cover help members to stay financially agile while maintaining strong protection.
The Amplifire benefit, available across all Profmed options, rewards members who complete their annual preventative screenings by unlocking up to R2,750 in additional benefits each year. While this additional benefit must be used in the calendar year, members can use it for any medical related issue, from unplanned GP visits to glasses.
ProActive Plus and ProSecure grow with members
As members progress in their careers and family life, Profmed’s ProActive Plus and ProSecure plans offer richer day-to-day and maternity benefits. ProActive Plus introduces coverage for GPs, medication, and dentistry, while ProSecure expands to include comprehensive maternity care, paediatrics, and enhanced out-of-hospital benefits.
Designed for modern professionals
“No other medical scheme in South Africa is built exclusively for professionals. That’s why we can offer benefits like sabbatical cover, modular flexibility, and rewards that truly reflect our members’ realities. Whether you’re starting out, growing a family, or taking your expertise global, Profmed is designed for you.”
