Profmed recognises the impact of Gender Based Violence, particularly when the violence or abuse is perpetrated by someone close to you. Our new WHISPA programme provides a safe place for victims of all ages and genders to voice their fear and trauma and to access professional counselling and legal assistance.

LifeSense is Profmed’s designated service provider for this benefit. The helpline is available 24/7 and provides safe passage of information and assistance to our members.

Understanding GBV
Gender-based violence takes on many forms and includes, but is not limited to, the following areas of violence or abuse:
- Physical abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Emotional, verbal and psychological abuse
- Economic abuse
- Intimidation
- Harassment
- Stalking
- Damage to property
- Rape & sexual assault
- Flashing
- Sexual exploitation
- Sexual grooming
- Child pornography

WHO IS COVERED?
This programme provides emotional and psychological support in the event of violence or abuse experienced by persons of any gender or age. The benefit is available to members and their dependants, i.e. spouse/partner, child and adult dependants, on all options but is only available within South Africa.
YOUR PRIVACY IS ASSURED
Due to the sensitive nature of GBV, we are committed to ensuring that any assistance you access through this benefit remains strictly confidential between you and WHISPA. To ensure this confidentiality, claims for the first four counselling consultations will be processed anonymously and will not reflect on any claims advices or benefit summaries on the Profmed system, including the online login portal and the App.
Accessing additional services
Any additional services required over and above the benefit provided will be processed through the normal channels on the system and will therefore be visible to the member and any beneficiaries who have access to benefit information on the system or on email. To maintain the confidentiality for the affected beneficiary, it is advisable that the additional services be funded out-of-pocket. Please discuss this with your psychologist or counsellor to find an appropriate solution.
BENEFITS AVAILABLE
Telephonic counselling
Telephonic counselling sessions are provided at no cost. The number of sessions will be determined by the case manager.
Face-to-face counselling
Each beneficiary has access to four face-to-face consults per incident. Thereafter, benefits will be paid from the available day-to-day benefit. Please refer to the section “Accessing additional services” for alternative solutions should you not wish the additional services to reflect on the membership profile.
Legal assistance
Beneficiaries have access to half an hour telephonic consultation with a lawyer at no cost. Should you require additional consultations, these costs will be for your personal account.
This benefit is available to members and their dependants, i.e spouse/ partner, children and adult dependants on all options, but is only available within South Africa.
