Dr Newell graduated as a dentist from Wits in 1987 and had a general dental practice for over 20 years. In 2010 a cycling accident rendered him unable to continue to practice dentistry. He was privileged to be able to dedicate two years to his rehabilitation and thereafter was appointed as a trustee on Profmed Medical Scheme board from 2012 to June 2018. Profmed co-opted Dr Newell as a member of the Profmed Medical Committee for the year 2018/2019. He was also part of a dental implant research team from 2013 to 2016. Dr Newell’s years in private practice and as a Profmed member since 1989 have provided the valuable perspective of both provider and member. He is currently studying a two-year post-graduate diploma in Life Coaching at The South African Institute of Psychology. He plans to focus on people involved in the healthcare industry as well as people with disabilities.
Adv Crouse has held private Advocate chambers in the Western Cape, inter alia specialising in medico-legal matters, alternative dispute resolutions and labour law since 2017. Prior to his current activities, Adv Crouse for 10 years held various managing executive roles in the corporate healthcare environment with, inter alia, niche medical provision funds, including at Barclays Africa Consultants and Actuaries. Before joining Barclays Africa, he served for eight years as a Senior Judge in terms of the Military Courts Act promulgated in 1999 after practising in the legal profession for many years and also having flown as a qualified pilot for two airlines. Adv Crouse is also an acknowledged international authority in the fields of medical ethics, international humanitarian law and “Medicine and the Law”. His unique contribution to this field currently includes being the Senior Legal Advisor to the Secretary General and Chairman of the Scientific Council of the International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM), based in Brussels, Belgium. Adv Crouse is also the Head of an international course of ICMM which has been presented to medical practitioners for the past 15 years in various countries.
Mr Anderson has in excess of 45 years’ extensive experience in the healthcare industry. He qualified as a pharmacist and spent two years in retail pharmacy before joining the Clinic Holdings Group of Hospitals in 1974. In 1984 he was appointed to the Board of Clinic Holdings, when he took on group responsibility. In 1987, when the group listed on the JSE, he was appointed Executive Director of the group and was responsible for group operations, hospital acquisitions and construction of new hospitals. In 1997 he was appointed as CEO of Southern Healthcare JV, a position which he held until 1999. Mr Anderson then consulted to both the healthcare and healthcare funding industries until 2003. After being a trustee of Profmed Medical Scheme for a year, he was appointed as the Principal Officer and Chief Executive of Profmed on 1 August 2003 and retired on 31 December 2018. Mr Anderson is the founding member of the Health Funders Association (HFA), an independent body representing the interests of the healthcare funding industry, and was the inaugural chairman of the Board of HFA.
