Pregnancy is definitely a memorable ride, filled with highs like hearing your baby’s heartbeat for the first time and lows like morning sickness or all-day sickness.
According to OB/GYNS, morning sickness is experienced by 80% of pregnant women and is a result of large amounts of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) hormones which are released into your body and subsequently cause nausea.
Morning sickness is typically more prevalent during the first trimester of pregnancy and then tapers off at the beginning of the second. However, there are those mums-to-be who experience nausea and vomiting all throughout the nine-month ride.
There are many chemical, natural and home-made remedies that have been tried and tested by mums around the world, to relieve the symptoms of nausea.
But, since no two pregnancies are alike, we spoke to a few mums who shared their morning sickness ailments in hopes to turn your pregnancy roller-coaster ride into smooth sailing … and by this we mean the kind of sailing that doesn’t give you nausea.
Ginger is a strongly flavoured root that comes from tropical zingiber officinale plant. It is widely used in medicine and cooking to prevent many health related problems. We all know that ginger has long been recommended as a stomach soother but can it relieve morning sickness?
According to Julie, mum of twins who had a double dosage of HCG, ginger is the way to go! During her first trimester and up until her mid-second trimester, 13 weeks in total, she swore by all things ginger. This included ginger biscuits, ginger tea, and ginger beer —non-alcoholic of course.
Studies have shown that adding grated ginger to hot water or tea, sipping flat ginger ale or sucking on crystallized ginger sweets helps to quell queasiness. Other mums say taking ginger capsules, eating a slice of fresh ginger or simply smelling the fresh scent of ginger can help ease nausea and keep vomiting at bay. If you’re craving something slightly more adventurous, try heating ginger syrup and pouring it over vanilla ice cream—it’s a treat!
2: DRY CRACKERS
Keeping dry crackers in your bed-side table or in your handbag is a great way to avoid nausea. An empty stomach is hypersensitive to saliva and letting your saliva hit your empty stomach often results in nausea. That’s why starch and salty carb-rich snacks work wonders in absorbing excess stomach acid and saliva in the stomach which in turn alleviates the nausea.
Velda, who has been pregnant 3 times before, experienced morning sickness at night for the first 2 months of her pregnancy. She says a combination of dry crackers, fresh air and rest did the job for her.
Other mums insist that dry cereal, pretzels, noodles, bread and toast are a necessity when dealing with morning sickness. The great thing about theses snacks is that they are portable, inexpensive and easy to digest.
3: EPSOM SALTS
Epsom salts contain magnesium which is one of the most important elements to eliminating morning sickness. Magnesium balances cortisol levels in our bodies by cleaning the excess amount from our blood. When you are pregnant, hormones inhibit your ability to absorb magnesium, which leads to an excess build-up of stress hormones and thus causes nausea. That’s why midwives and doctors alike recommend Epsom salts to pregnant women.
Zinthle, who is a mum of 1 experienced morning sickness from the first to thethird trimester of her pregnancy. She found that a small dosage, ¼ of a teaspoon, of Epsom salts did the trick. Although Epsom salts are best taken orally, some women don’t like the taste and therefore choose to take Epsom salt baths or opt for soaking their feet in warm Epsom salts water.
Since taking an Epsom salts bath is more of a regime best practiced at home, an alternative would be using a magnesium spray, and letting it absorb for a few minutes before taking a shower. If you don’t have time for the latter, you can also try magnesium supplements.
The truth is that there are many different remedies to abate morning sickness, it’s just about finding the right mixture that works best for you and your baby. We always recommend plenty of rest, water and fresh air.
