You’re expecting – now what?

Congratulations! Whether you’re excited or still a bit surprised, or maybe a mixture of both, now is the time to relax and take things easy as the next few months may bring a few unexpected twists and turns. Here are 5 things you should do as soon as you find out you’re pregnant.

1. First things first

Make an appointment with your doctor for your first antenatal appointment. During this appointment your doctor will calculate your due date, check your vital signs and then do a sonar to check on your growing bean. He might also send you for a few blood tests and ask you a few questions about your health history. It’s important that you choose a doctor that you are comfortable with – pregnancy is such a special journey and choosing a doctor that you are comfortable with will make the experience so much more special.

2. Start taking your vitamins

Even before you’ve visited your gynaecologist it is a good idea to start off with a folic acid supplement ASAP. Folic acid will assist in the healthy brain and spinal cord development of your baby.

3. Cut down on caffeine

Try and cut down on caffeine loaded drinks like coffee, tea and cola. Not only is caffeine found in these common drinks, but it’s also hidden in food, like chocolate. The daily recommended limit of caffeine intake for pregnant women is no more than 200mg.

4. Be food-wise

It’s important that you focus on what you put into your body. Knowing which foods are safe to consume during pregnancy is vital. Sushi, soft cheese, shell fish and biltong are just a few foods that aren’t safe during pregnancy. Not only do you need to be on the lookout for these foods, you also now need to make sure you eat healthy balanced meals to ensure your bump gets the right nutrients to grow.

5. Read as much as you can

Knowledge is power! Read, read and read some more. Equip yourself with as much information as possible. There are great resources available for expecting mommies. ‘What to expect when you’re expecting’ and ‘Pregnancy Sense’ are both great books to help you equip yourself with the information you will need during your pregnancy. By reading and educating yourself you can prepare yourself on the unknown, and reduce any unnecessary anxiety you might be experiencing.

The first few weeks in your pregnancy are the most critical time and therefore you need to focus on getting enough rest and taking extra good care of yourself. But also remember to enjoy your growing bump, take pictures of your belly before and track the changes in your body. It’s also a good idea to download a preggy app that will track your baby’s growth and send you updates weekly. Congratulations again mommy! Before you know it, you’ll be holding your bundle in your arms!
